The data–over 2 Billion transactions worth–says that your customers will pay a surcharge without batting an eye. In fact, you pay them all the time.
You’re probably familiar with gas stations that charge a ”cash” or “credit” price. This is a surcharge, usually around 4%.
When you buy gas, do you pay cash?
When the convenience store industry began charging to use a card for small transactions, a minimum of 5%, card usage actually went UP. The industry as a whole saw an uplift in Net Margin of about .5%.
When airlines started surcharging for checked bags, the hue and cry was loud. But, they now create billions of dollars in Net Margin to the industry. And they are as busy as ever.
Remember, the name of the game is profit. If you are not surcharging, you are leaving a huge amount of money on the table.
